If your home is connected to mains gas or is currently heated using LPG then you can still gain some efficiency and cost savings. As a minimum, if you don't have an up to date condensing boiler, room thermostats and thermostatic valves then you're not heating your home efficiently using gas. There is also a new technology emerging which will change the gas usage pattern in the UK. Gas absorption heat pumps use gas to heat water, and then, much like a traditional air source or ground source heat pumps they convert that into more energy than you put in.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you improve my heating system without replacing my boiler?
Usually yes. Most older heating systems can take advantage of new controls or weather compensation to improve their efficiency without going to the expense of replacing a boiler. Having said that, if your boiler is more than 10 years old then it could be approaching the end of its life anyway.
- How much more efficient are condensing boilers?
New condensing gas boilers can be up to 97% efficient. Some older boilers could have an efficiency level of below 70%, depending on their age.
- Should I replace my standard boiler with a combi boiler?
Not always, it depends on your hot water requirement. If your home often has more than one person taking shower or people cooking while others are showering then it could be better for you to keep a hot water tank. Modern hot water tanks are well insulated and can hang onto their heat for two days or more, so heat loss is much less of a problem than it has been in the past.
