Generating Electricity to Power Your Home

Solar panels generate most of their power at midday. You need heat and hot water outside these times for a comfortable home. Closing that gap, by banking surplus generation as stored heat rather than exporting it, is where solar stops being a separate product and becomes part of the system.

What it is

One system, not three separate purchases.

Solar and battery storage work as a pair: the panels generate electricity that can help run the heat pump, and the battery stores it for when the sun isn’t shining. Sized together with the heat pump, they reduce the electricity a home draws from the grid and lower running costs further.

Combined properly, through hybridisation, the panels and the heat pump operate as one system rather than three separate purchases.

How it works

Hybridisation, step by step.

Hybridisation links the solar array and the heat pump so surplus power is used rather than exported.

1

Powers the home first

The panels generate electricity, which first powers whatever is already running in the home.

2

Surplus identified

When there's a surplus, the system identifies power that would otherwise be exported to the grid.

3

Surplus mode

The heat pump enters a surplus mode, targeting a slightly higher temperature to store the extra energy as heat.

4

Modulates in real time

It modulates moment to moment, matching output to the surplus available, adjusting even as a cloud passes.

5

Covers the evening

As generation falls, it returns to its normal efficient settings, and the stored heat covers the evening.

Alongside that, UK electricity tariffs increasingly vary by time of day. A hybrid-ready system runs harder when prices are low, eases off when they’re high and works with whatever you generate.

Key Benefits

What hybridisation actually earns you.

What we specify, and why

Reviewed regularly, not fixed to one brand.

We install in-roof and on-roof solar, and battery storage, working with manufacturers including Sunsynk, Jinko, Pylontech and Dyness. Unlike heating, where we specify two manufacturers and stay with them, solar moves at pace. Panels, inverters and batteries technology moves on every two or three years, so we review what we fit regularly rather than committing to one brand indefinitely. Whatever we recommend, our engineers are trained on it and the manufacturer’s warranty is registered.

MCS Certified · Solar PV

We’re MCS certified for solar PV, which is what makes your installation eligible for Smart Export Guarantee payments. You can’t claim them without it.

Battery Storage

We’re not certified under the separate MCS battery standard, because battery storage doesn’t require it. Batteries sit outside both the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and the Smart Export Guarantee, neither your funding nor your export payments are affected. The same qualified team carries out the work either way and your workmanship covers the work we carry out for 2 years and your manufacturer’s warranty covers the hardware.

The Funding

Solar sits outside the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

Solar PV and battery storage aren’t covered by the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which funds heat pumps, biomass boilers and air-to-air heat pumps. Qualifying installation work is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027. Exported electricity is paid for under the Smart Export Guarantee, with rates set by individual suppliers rather than government, so it’s worth comparing.

Every installation is notified to the network operator. Battery storage counts toward the connection threshold either way, and we handle both applications.

G98 National Grid Connection · Smaller Systems

Up to 16A per phase

Roughly 3.68kW on a single-phase supply. Can be installed first and notified to the network operator within 28 days.  Once connected we notify National Grid on your behalf.

G99 National Grid Connection · Larger Systems

G99 connection

Needs approval before connection, typically four to eight weeks. We handle the application on your behalf.

Questions

Frequently asked questions.

Does solar qualify for the £7,500 grant?

No. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme funds heat pumps, A2A (£2,500) and biomass boilers only. Solar PV and battery storage sit outside it. Qualifying installation work is zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027, and exported electricity is paid for under the Smart Export Guarantee.

They’re designed to work together. The battery or the hot water cylinder holds what the panels generate, and the controls decide when to release it, including to run the heat pump efficiently. Most of the value is lost when the two are bought as separate products rather than designed as one system.

From a site visit rather than a postcode. Roof orientation, shading, structural condition and how much electricity the household actually uses through the day all factor in, and the array and battery are sized against that. A bigger array isn’t automatically the right answer.

Usually. We check what inverter and array you already have as part of the survey and design around it rather than replacing something that still works. Whether full hybridisation is possible depends on the existing equipment.

Often not. Storing surplus generation as heat in the hot water cylinder achieves much of what a battery does, at a lower upfront cost. A battery still earns its place where evening electrical demand is high or where you want backup, and we model both.

It starts with how you actually use electricity, not a roof measurement.
